Banned/Challenged Graphic Novels

Staff-created list

As librarians, we follow the American Library Association’s Code of Ethics which most clearly states that libraries “uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and resist all efforts to censor library resources.” Every year however libraries across America are challenged by well-intended people who personally object to the material available to the public. In recent years attempted censorship has been on the rise. For example, Texas State Senator Matt Karuse published a list of 850 books he wants removed from all Texas public schools. Many schools have preemptively removed these books while formal decisions are being made. All is not lost however, many public libraries vehemently work against censorship, and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has great resources and assistance for those who aim to keep these books on shelves. This graphic novel made it to the ALA’s annual Top Ten Challenged books list in 2016 due to the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters, drug use, and profanity an...Show more This graphic novel made it to the ALA’s annual Top Ten Challenged books list in 2016 due to the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters, drug use, and profanity and was subject to a heavily biased media attack in Seminole county, Florida resulting in its removal from county elementary schools and near-removal from high school classrooms. Much of the conflicts arose as a result from being awarded the prestigious Caldecott Metal. The Caldecott Metal is awarded to picture books intended for readers under the age of 14, however many of the awarded books are intended for ages 8 and under. Many adults saw the Metal and understood it to be intended for the youngest of readers without knowing the actual scope of the award, or the 12 + age recommendation for this specific novel. Though being challenged across America, the book remains on many shelves. This One Summer centers around Rose’s vacation to the beach. This summer however is very different because of the emotions she is processing at that age. Show less

The school announced they would be revamping their recommended reading website. This novel explores the real-life story of a 19-year-old Cree woman who was kidnapped and murdered in La Pas, Manitoba in 1971. Regarding this censorship Robertson said “If we take that our of [students] hands, then how are we going to teach them about it?” and that he wrote Betty to “bridge the gap between the classroom and the outside world. Both Alberta, and Manitoba are revamping their guided curriculum in order to focus on curriculum that “honors the history and perspectives of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities.” Show less
