One of my friends who previously reviewed this described it as "atmospheric and intense." Another as "dark" and "gray." Yes, very much so. And while there are times I enjoy getting empathetically swept up in a dark, atmospheric, melancholy tale, this one tipped a bit too far until I felt I was on the verge of drowning in the intense gray. It was a skillfully told story that clearly moved me and made me feel things, but too much of that was frustration and despair and not enough of it poignant or insightful to say I enjoyed the experience of reading it. I was drawn into the world created and the frustrations of the characters, but I didn't feel drawn into the characters as much as I would have liked. A powerful downer of a fable.
