1. 1. Fun Home

   a Family Tragicomic

   Bechdel, Alison, 1960-

The best thing I read in 2006 hands down. One of my all time favorites of anything I've read. Bechdel does things here that can only be done in comics. Love her use of maps.

2. 2. WE3

   Morrison, Grant

Add WE3 to your for later shelf

One of Morrison's more accessible works, and perhaps my favorite example of Frank Quitely's art.

3. 3. Black Hole

   Burns, Charles, 1955-

Add Black Hole to your for later shelf

Just a great story. About alienation and disease. Wonderful black and white art.

4. 4. From Hell

Being a Melodrama in Sixteen Parts

   Moore, Alan, 1953-

Add From Hell to your for later shelf

This story made me feel sick while I read it. Anything that can evoke that sort of feeling belongs on a top list.

5. 5. Preacher. Book One, [Gone to Texas]

   Ennis, Garth

Add Preacher. Book One, [Gone to Texas] to your for later shelf

All American epics should begin as this does, in Texas. Plus Vampires.

6. 6. The Dormant Beast

   Bilal, Enki

Add The Dormant Beast to your for later shelf

Enki Bilal is a force. This is perhaps my favorite of his. The Nikopol Trilogy is another worth checking out.

7. 7. Torso

   a True Crime Graphic Novel

   Bendis, Brian Michael

Add Torso to your for later shelf

Great use of negative space in this true crime story about the Torso Killer in Cleveland that brought down Elliot Ness.

8. 8. Planetary. [Vol.] 1, All Over the World, and Other Stories

   Ellis, Warren

Add Planetary. [Vol.] 1, All Over the World, and Other Stories to your for later shelf

These superheroes delve through 100 years of pulp culture. My favorite Warren Ellis story. Love the art by John Cassaday.

9. 9. Supreme. The Story of the Year

   Moore, Alan, 1953-

Add Supreme. The Story of the Year to your for later shelf

Pretty much the only superhero story that matters. The art is a bit weak in parts, but I love the reveal at the end. Moore hits this one out of the park.

10. 10. Blankets

    An Illustrated Novel

    Thompson, Craig, 1975-

Add Blankets to your for later shelf

A beautiful first love story and memoir with flowing evocative art.
