Banned/Challenged Graphic Novels

As librarians, we follow the American Library Association’s Code of Ethics which most clearly states that libraries “uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and resist all efforts to censor library resources.” Every year however libraries across America are challenged by well-intended people who personally object to the material available to the public. In recent years attempted censorship has been on the rise. For example, Texas State Senator Matt Karuse published a list of 850 books he wants removed from all Texas public schools. Many schools have preemptively removed these books while formal decisions are being made. All is not lost however, many public libraries vehemently work against censorship, and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has great resources and assistance for those who aim to keep these books on shelves. So prithee, check out these graphic novels and see what all the fuss is about!
